Dead can type

Read description

This project questions the relationship between modern technology and language. S. Johnson called language “the dress of thought”. Humanity is losing this dress now. One language dies every two weeks. A community abandons its tongue in favor of a language used by a more powerful group or due to a negative attitude towards its own language, or its speakers simply pass away.

Every language “owns” its own keyboard in this project. It captures a visual style of a given culture. The keyboard represents contemporary technology. It is also a medium that “revitalizes” a writing script of a dead language. Dead can type. The keyboards evoke the voices of ancestors and let us reconnect with diverse languages which are no longer in use.
